Measures to further restrict transportation of plants between islands and at ports and airports are being taken to contain the outbreak. Ceratitis capitata is considered the world's most serious fruit fly species, primarily due to its wide distribution area, tolerance of cooler climates, and wide host range. There have been numerous detections of C. capitata in California, necessitating intensive eradication and detection programs to prevent the establishment of the pest in the United States. 'Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus,' the causal agent of Huanglongbing (citrus greening), was confirmed by molecular analysis. 'Candidatus L. asiaticus' is vectored by the Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri (Hemiptera: Psyllidae), but the pathogen can also be transmitted through graft propagation and via parasitic Cuscuta spp. (dodder). First detected in the United States (Florida) in 2005, 'Ca. L. asiaticus' severely affects Citrus spp. The British Society for Plant Pathology New Disease Reports 18.
